![]() ![]() Mine don’t always work out, but you often end up with some happy accidents. This has set in motion lots of new experiments with making repeats etc, and now I often play around repeating sketches to see how they look. ![]() The reason I think the Liberty collaboration was important for me is that it opened my eyes to drawing and painting for fabric. I am self-taught, which is a strength and also sometimes a frustration because I haven’t had an art school experience of learning how to make pattern repeats, or printing in a thousand different ways I simply make pictures in whatever way makes sense at the time. I was lucky because they happened to be looking for someone who could do what I do, and I fell into their lap. I knew Liberty was a fancy shop close to a blues bar I like, but I wasn’t aware of its history or reputation. She showed them the tiger, which they liked, and then they gave me a call. It was good timing! I write stories, and Queue came about because I sent a novel with an illustration of a tiger on its cover to a literary agent, and by chance she was having dinner that night with someone from Liberty. How did the collaboration with Liberty Art Fabrics come about? Liberty of London, being one of the biggest and most prestigious fabric stores worldwide, must have been a massive break for you as a designer/illustrator. I was lucky enough to interview OKDavid about his time designing for Liberty and all about his illustrative ‘style’! OKDavid modelling his conversational print in the blue colour way ![]() A subtle wristwatch on the tusk of the elephant and a giraffe modelling the signature Liberty trainers, OKDavid enjoys planting hidden charms throughout his work and bringing an illustrative style to his print designs. “Queue for the Zoo” illustrates the imaginative and playful mind of the man behind the design, Omprakash Kaga David (OKDavid) as he took on the challenge to create a print for Liberty’s childrenswear department. Fitting with the Liberty of London 140th Birthday celebrations, I felt it was only right to write about one of my all time favourite prints which happens to be one of Liberty Art Fabrics bestsellers in recent years. ![]()
